The gas reserve found here is one of the largest in the world. The burning gas crater near Darvaza is an absolutely unique site. I have not seen anything similar anywhere else in the world. It is a long drive from Ashgabat, particularly if you’re not staying the night but driving back in the dark. It is totally worth it though.

It is in the middle of the Karakum Desert, about 260 kilometres (160 mi) north of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.
